EMERGENCY GENERATOR (EG)

TESTING and MAINTENANCE

Ozone Season is once again upon us. Just a reminder that testing of emergency generators cannot be conducted on days where the air is projected to be unhealthy. Here are some steps to avoid compliance issues and penalties for operating emergency generators on unhealthy ozone action days.

1)        Check the following website after 4 pm the day before your emergency generator is to be tested.https://www.airnow.gov/state/?name=new-jersey

2)        If an Ozone Action Day is forecasted where the air is stated to be Unhealthy for Sensitive GroupsUnhealthyVery Unhealthy, or Hazardous,, re-schedule the emergency generator testing to avoid compliance issues and penalties.

3)        NJDEP air enforcement staff used the day before prediction as a basis for compliance. Note: If there is no prediction of an ozone action day after 4pm the day before any testing of an emergency generator, and the next day there is a declaration of an ozone action day, you can continue to test the emergency generator without violating your air permit or NJDEP Air regulations.

Any emergency generator with a maximum rated power output of 37 kW or greater, shall maintain the following recordkeeping items:

1)        Once per month, Record the total operating time from the EGs hour meter;

2)        When the EG is operated for testing or maintenance

a) Specify the reason for the EG to be operating;

b) The date of operation;

c) Start up and shut down time;

d) The total operating time for testing and maintenance based on the EG hour meter;

e) The name of the person operating the EG.

NOTE: If your EG is subject to a NJDEP Air permit, federal NSPS or Neshaps regulations you may need to record additional maintenance requirements related to:
